UME was founded twenty-five years ago as a paternship between neurologist Wang Xiu Ying and weapons researcher Cameron Tufnell. Xiu Ying spent 15 years as a neurologist at Toronto's Mount Sinai hospital, successfully developing empathy technology to use with her patients suffering from Aspergers. Her work was the subject of much controversy, suggesting that a third party technology could be the solution for this disorder that had perplexed health researchers and practitioners for decades.
Tufnell joined Xiu Ying in 2025, after leaving the weapons research arm of the Canadian military to spend more time with his son who suffers from Aspergers. Later that same year, Tufnell announced that his family has hereditary Asbergers, and he would be allocating his time and resources to working with Xiu Ying to develop a publicly accessible version of the technology.
